The “1/3 rule” for cabinet hardware is a simple design guideline that helps achieve perfect balance and proportion. It suggests that the handle length should be roughly one-third the width of the drawer or cabinet door. This ensures the hardware looks neither too large nor too small for the space. For example, a 60cm drawer would look best with a handle about 20cm approx. long (60 ÷ 3 = 20).

The 1/3 rule is just a starting point, consider the hardware style as well,  you can adjust the handle size to match your desired aesthetic. For example, larger pulls can create a more modern, statement look, while smaller ones keep things subtle and classic. For smaller drawers (under 300mm wide), a 70–100mm pull or a 25mm knob usually works beautifully,  and for tall cabinet doors in a modern kitchen, a longer handle pull installed vertically often looks best. It not only enhances the sleek, contemporary style but also provides better grip and balance for larger doors.
